Take the test: Determine how often you should change your bed sheets

It’s an age-old question, how often are you supposed to change your bed sheets? There are usually two camps, those who argue it should be weekly and those that think fortnightly is perfect. As with most home habits, the best sheet-changing routine depends on your lifestyle, so we thought we’d help you decide what’s right for you.

1. What’s your sleeping temperature?

If you are a hot sleeper, you may want to consider washing your sheets weekly. This is especially important if you live in the warmer parts of Australia, where warm summer nights could make you sweat more than usual.

Cooler sleepers in cooler or climate-controlled environments may get away with a fortnightly wash, as long as your bed is exposed to a decent amount of sunlight and fresh air during the day.

2. How long do you (and your pets) spend in bed?

You should also consider how long you spend in bed. Do you simply sleep a traditional 7-8 hours in bed? Or do you also nap, read and watch movies? The way that your bed is used (and for how many hours per day) affects how often you should change your sheets.

If you find yourself spending hours in bed awake, or inviting pets to lie next to you, you may want to change your sheets weekly.

3. The Benefits of Regular Sheet Washing

Washing your sheets regularly ensures that the natural build-up of dust and dirt can be removed. Particularly for people with allergies, unclean bedding left unchecked can inflame skin or respiratory conditions.

Different types of bed sheets may also benefit from more regular washing than others. For example, washed linen sheet sets will love regular washing, as they naturally soften with each wash cycle.

Also, we would be remiss not to mention how divine freshly washed sheets feel. Regular washing is worth it just to get that feeling more regularly!

4. Do You Need to Wash Bedding Too?

When considering your sheet washing routine, it’s also important to factor in your other bedding. We recommend washing your mattress protector and pillow protectors every time you wash your sheets. It is also a great idea to take your pillows, quilts and mattress topper and let them air on the washing line every fortnight. This will kill any bacteria and allow your bedding to plump up with the fresh air.

So… How Often Should You Change Your Sheets?

Ultimately, it all comes down to your preference and lifestyle. Your bed is your sanctuary, and you should do what works best for you. We recommend you enjoy that fresh, clean feeling every week, however if every fortnight works for you, that’s ok too! If you’re in need of a new set of sheets to kick off this new washing habit, don’t look past our stunning range, which includes soft as silk bamboo, breathable cotton, luxurious linen and so much more, here.
