Cushions are the finishing touch that can elevate your couch from ordinary to effortlessly stylish – but how do you strike the perfect balance between comfort and design? We’ve asked our stylist, Roxy Foster, for her top tips on how to style cushions on your couch. Keep reading to discover the essentials of cushion styling to make your couch the statement piece of your home!
I absolutely love taking a “CTC” approach! Colour, Texture, and Comfort are the perfect way to curate cushions that bring both style and cosiness into your space.
Start with a hero cushion to give your styling a clear focus before you build the rest of your cushion arrangement. When choosing your hero cushion, it’s important to consider the design, texture & colours that will match back with your home décor.
Draw inspiration from your space, whether you match your hero cushion colour to the tones of your wall art or any accent pieces in your living room. Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist, it’s important to choose a hero cushion that will elevate your space and tie it all together. For a maximalist look, go for bold colours, embellished designs or abstract and linear designs. For a more minimal, classic aesthetic, a laid-back stripe or a simply patterned cushion could be a better fit.
From here, the Colour, Texture and Comfort combination can be built out. Starting with your hero cushion, pair it with a plain cushion that matches the colour scheme and then add some interest with a textured cushion like our boucle or faux fur ranges. Mixing different textures and colours really gives your couch a lively, inviting vibe.
The final step after you’ve chosen your colour scheme and added contrasting textures is to make sure the comfort aspect is there. Feather inners are a game-changer for comfort, plus they look amazing and full. We love a good mix of fabulous looks with functional comfort!
Whether you’re styling your couch for the first time with a fresh canvas or updating your cushions as a quick and affordable way to refresh your space, the “CTC” method is a great motto to keep in mind when choosing your new couch cushions. What’s better about styling your couch with cushions – it’s like getting a mini makeover for your loungeroom without the commitment of bigger changes and a fun way to play with new patterns or seasonal colours.
There are a couple of questions to ask yourself when choosing and styling cushions:
Our homes are our sanctuary, so it’s important for it to be a place that you can come home to and RELAX after a big day. When it comes to considering cushions – it’s really such a personal choice. They can really add comfort and personality to a space, so it’s important to choose pieces that make you feel good, rather than just following trends. After all, your home should be an outwards reflection of what you love, who you are and where you draw inspiration from.
If you’re starting from scratch, look around at the things that inspire you – it could be your fashion, your inner circle, your hobbies, your music.
As an example, if you love the beach and heading to the coast you could incorporate coastal colours of white, natural and blue, palm tree motifs and waving textures to create that same relaxing vibe that you get on a weekend beach trip!
A great platform for collating your ideas and home décor you like is Pinterest or Instagram – follow your favourite pages, see how others are decorating their spaces, and you might find combinations or themes you like. Remember to go for pieces you LOVE and build out your couch cushion styling Trends can come and go, but your own cosy, personalised space is always a winner!
Now that we have our cushion combos let’s get styling! I love the idea of layering the textured cushion at the back as a way to anchor the arrangement, and then building the layers with solids and using your hero cushion in front to bring a fun focal point to your couch. Don’t be afraid of different heights and sizes with your cushions – embracing an asymmetrical, eclectic mix adds so much character and a fabulous lived-in feel.
Again, colour is such a personal choice! Its whatever makes your heart skip a beat and flood with joy and excitement when you see and feel it. But – let’s have a little chat about colour to help you choose what’s best for you.
We have 3 main groups for colour, there are warm tones, cool tones and neutrals tones. Everyone has their own colour comfort range, but my suggestion for your cooler tones would be for a coastal feel, warmer tones for a bohemian/ mid- century feel and neutral for a minimal or Hamptons space. My favourite cushion combos at the moment include our new Two Tone Frankie Stripe cushions. The Chocolate & Berry are my favourite! I love to mix these with our Ava Boucle cushion in Caramel, and then finish off with an Isle Palms Embroidered cushion for some chunky texture! Have fun styling!
So, whether you’re looking to create a more minimalist style, a coastal escape or a bold and beautiful maximalist interior our stylist Roxy’s expert tips make it easy to refresh your space and give your couch a new and stylish look. So, have fun mixing and matching with the Colour, Texture and Comfort method – after all, the best cushion combinations are ones that feel uniquely you!
