It’s been all over the news! Our Olympic athletes in the Tokyo Olympic Village are sleeping on eco-efficient cardboard beds! Despite them having a customized mattress, Paddle Australia felt their athletes were going to need a little bit more comfort to get a great night’s sleep before they competed on the world stage, so they called in the comfort experts…

Mattress topper selection process
Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement National Manager of Paddle Australia, Matt Murphy was behind the decision to choose Pillow Talk’s mattress toppers for their Olympic athletes to sleep on in their preparation for and time in Tokyo. “Pillow Talk was chosen for their huge product range, allowing the athletes to have a more individualised product”, says Matt.
This was extremely important given the number of athletes associated with Paddle Australia and their range of needs. As there were many different requirements, our staff were able to suggest products and alternatives where required. The team praised the knowledge of the staff and their recommendations.
A huge favourite within the team was the Comfort Science 5cm Memory Foam Topper. Some of the athletes going to Tokyo had concerns about their backs and wanted to ensure old injuries did not resurface during the most important event of their careers. These athletes opted for our memory foam mattress toppers thanks to their cushioning effects, which reduces rebound and will keep their backs more stable.
After picking up their mattress toppers, the athletes were able to sleep on them at home to adjust before having them sent to Tokyo.

Sleep like an athlete
Athletes are continuously training and because of this, their bodies need to recover and adapt quickly. Sleep is the number one recovery intervention for adaptions, meaning high quality sleep results in effective change and development in the body. Once the athletes get to Tokyo it’s all about sleep consistency and recovery.
More than just to sleep on
During these games there is a heightened focus on ensuring the athletes have comfortable bedding. With increased restrictions around movement in the Olympic Village, they will be spending more time than ever in their rooms. Ensuring the athletes are comfortable with this is an important factor especially for their mental health and general wellbeing.
If you’d like to sleep like an athlete too, shop our range of mattress toppers, here.
We want to wish all the athletes good luck in the Olympic and Paralympic games. We will be watching and cheering you on from back home!
