At Home With Pillow Talk | summerset_house

If you’re like us, you love watching home tours on TikTok and understanding a little more about the ‘why’ of someone’s styling. We love getting a sneak peek into their thoughts and what makes their home, theirs, from their organisational tips and tricks to the inspiration behind their new artwork. It’s amazing how the same products styled in a new way can completely change their feel.

This beloved peek behind closed doors is why we wanted to bring you the At Home with Pillow Talk series where we take a look in detail into the homes of some of our favourite creators. We wanted to know what makes their homes truly theirs and find out their favourite styling tips and tricks.

We recently collaborated with Christine from @summerset_house and wanted to hear more about her stunning home, and the woman who lives in it!

How would you describe your style?

I would summarise my style as modern Mediterranean x Australian coastal. I love the spin that Aussie’s have taken on the traditional coastal look, moving away from strictly blues and whites and creating a coastal, calm home by incorporating natural textures and a light and airy feel to the space. You will see more nods to the Mediterranean style as we continue our renovation, with textured walls, lots of timber, raw materials and a warm colour palette.

What was your thought process around styling your home?

I have known the overall vision for a while, but I didn’t want to go gung-ho and have purchase regret because I didn’t plan things out. Breaking it down room by room really helped me decide what I want to get out of each space now and in the long term. Sticking to one style also means I can create new looks by rearranging my décor and furnishings between rooms. I’ll be honest though, this can be hard at times when there are so many colour palettes and interior styles to love!

What’s your favourite part of your home?

Currently, this would probably be the kitchen and dining space. I just love the transformation we achieved by upcycling our old kitchen, redesigning the storage wall as our pantry and breakfast nook and building a waterfall dining table, all for a budget of $2000! I had a little ‘pinch me’ moment a few weeks ago when we entertained a group of 20 and we were all standing around the island bench and waterfall table. Something we weren’t able to do comfortably in this space prior to the renovation.

Is there a project in your home you’re currently working on?

Oh, always! The current project is a pavilion in our backyard. We will be converting an old double carport into a large entertaining space with build in bench seating and sandstone crazy pave. We plan to connect our upstairs terrace to our new pavilion by installing a spiral staircase. Stay tuned!

What is one piece in your home that screams you and your personality?

Funnily enough, it’s the smallest room in our home! Our recently renovated powder room could not be more us, and is an insight into what’s to come for our home.

Are there any special décor pieces you’re looking to add?

Every interior enthusiast knows that there are always special décor pieces waiting to be added to your home! At the top of my wish list is the large Monaco Decorative Case paired with the faux olive tree from Pillow Talk. I am also always on the lookout for cute ceramics and decorate vessels and small sculptures for shelf displays.

What are you top tips for a well-styled home?

Choose a style that YOU love and you will find that making choices will come so much more organically than if you feel pressured to lean towards what’s “in”. Another suggestion is to create styled vignettes, but also allow some surfaces to be untouched. I find this makes styling look purposeful, as well as making a space feel larger as not every section has been filled.

You have two absolutely gorgeous dogs, do they make it hard to keep a perfectly styled home?

Our two cocker spaniels, Lilo and Stitch, run this house! While we’re out at work, they’re lounging in the living room watching Dog TV. We close off the bedrooms and study, so that definitely helps to keep those spaces tidy. We recently bought a new light beige sofa, so I just pop some throws over the seat cushions in the mornings. A darker toned rug has helped too! Other than that, they are really well behaved. Maybe they have an appreciation for interiors like their mum?!

If you could have any home in the world, what would it be like?

SO.MANY.OPTIONS! But my heart always goes back to the beautiful architecture we saw in Mexico 5 years ago. Imagine a Mediterranean/Mexican inspired villa filled with raw, earthy textures, exposed beams, arches, lots of natural light and indoor/outdoor living. Panoramic ocean views and a pool wouldn’t go astray either! We can dream… right?!
