5 steps to setting a stunning Christmas table

Coming together around a table and the joy of sharing food, love and laughter is often a highlight of Christmas day and a cornerstone of many festive traditions. If you’re hosting, you may be wondering how to set the table for Christmas as beautifully as the ones you see on Instagram? We’ve asked our in-house stylists to collate this simple, fuss-free guide on how to create the Christmas table setting of your dreams.

1. Choose your palette

One of the key elements to a great table setting is layering, and to creating your dream Christmas table setting starts before you put anything on the table! We recommend starting by choosing your colour palette, with a base colour for your table linen. Keep in mind, the darker your table cloth or table runner the more formal your table will feel.

Once you’ve chosen your base colour, we recommend layering with accent colours but keep it simple – a maximum of 3 colours will create the most effect in your Christmas table setting. For a traditional Christmas look, pairing green, white and pops of red can fill your table with festivity. More of a coastal Christmas lover? Pair white, blue and gold accents to create a table setting that’s perfect for celebrating the holidays by the sea.

2. Set your base

If your table has imperfections or needs protecting, a table cloth is an easy way to cover it up and quickly add style. If you prefer to show your tabletop, a table runner down the centre is a great way to tie everything together. For something different, run it across the table to serve as placemats.

3. Add your places

Once you’ve chosen your colour scheme and have your table linen chosen, it’s time to add your place settings. Add an arrangement of dinnerware (such as plates and bowls), napkins and cutlery for each person joining you for your Christmas festivities. You can even take it a step further and personalise each setting with a name tag, sprig of greenery, napkin ring, ornament or ribbon as an extra touch.

4. Dress it up

A table centrepiece doesn’t have to be extravagant, but as the name suggests, it should be the focus and highlight of your Christmas table setting design. It’s important to keep the centrepiece low to ensure you don’t obscure your guests from talking across the table.

A favourite base piece of ours for creating a table centrepiece is one of our artificial garlands. Once you’ve placed your garland down the middle of the table, we recommend adding vases and candle holders of various heights to create a layered, dimensional look. Fill your vases with festive artificial greenery and flowers that you can use again around the house post-festive season and add taper candles to your candle holders for an elevated feeling.

5. Finishing touches

Finish off your festive table by adding in the all-important glassware and finishing festive touches like Christmas lights and candles for extra sparkle; then sit back and enjoy the beautiful table you have created.
