Polyester Cotton Sheets

Comfort and style, an intricate weave.

The way in which fabric is woven contributes to its feel and washability. Cotton sateen sheets, for example, are softer than those with a classic flat weave. A sateen weave has more warp threads on the top surface, resulting in a silk-like touch and appealing lustre. Which is better? It’s a matter a personal taste; some people prefer the crispness of a flat weave, others like the softness of the sateen finish.

Do thread counts, count?

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into 10sq centimeters of fabric. There is a common misconception that the higher the thread count, the better quality of sheet, however this isn’t necessarily accurate. Generally speaking, the higher the thread count, the more durable, soft and smooth the sheet will be. Be mindful that some manufacturers will inflate the thread count by twisting together multiple fine threads, increasing the thread count, but this will not increase the quality. A quality sheet should be determined by the quality and type of fibre and how the sheets feel against your body.

Flannelette

Flannelette yarns are very thick, so the weave can only fit around 110 threads per area of fabric. It is measured in weight (gsm – grams per square metre) rather than thread count. The yarns are thick as they are brushed and fluffed up, helping trap warm air, making them the perfect choice for winter.

Sateen

Cotton sateen is created by using a special weaving process to place more lengthwise yarns on the surface of the fabric. This process adds a gentle sheen to the fabric and a very soft feel.

Why size is important.

When considering the purchase of your sheet sets, it’s important to factor in the depth of your mattress. If you’ve added a mattress topper to your bed you may need a sheet set with a deeper wall, such as a Super Queen or Super King.
